Finding a Program in Your Community

 

1. Oklahoma Child Care Resource and Referral Association (OCCRRA)
Contact this organization to find lists of programs for school-aged children in a database of providers. OCCRRA also assists parents in finding programs in a specific area. Other parent resources are available at www.oklahomachildcare.org.

 

2. Ask a teacher or principal if your school has an afterschool program. If not, ask why. Tell him or her about the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program and invite him or her to visit www.ed.gov/21stcclc for more information.

 

3. Contact community organizations such as:

• Boys & Girls Clubs of America: 1-800-854-CLUB, www.bgca.org
• 4-H Council: www.fourhcouncil.edu; www.clover.okstate.edu/fourh/; www.oklahoma4h.okstate.edu

• Camp Fire Boys and Girls: www.campfire.org
Girl Scouts, www.girlscouts.org
Boy Scouts,www.scouting.org
• Park and Recreation Departments at your local City Hall
• Area churches, synagogues and mosques

4. Talk to other parents, guardians and grandparents about what their children and grandchildren do after school. They might be able to tell you about good programs in the area.

 

5. Contact the Oklahoma Afterschool Network to begin a community coalition focused on expanding the availability and improving the quality of afterschool programs in your community. Contact Us
